About Us
We are a non-profit organization founded in 2008 serving Garrett County, Maryland. We are committed to providing the Pre-kindergarten through grade six children in the Garrett County Public Schools with caring, committed, adult mentors. Our volunteer mentors are adults of all ages who serve as positive role models to children with various needs and backgrounds.
Mentors meet with the child they are matched with once a week during the child’s lunchtime at the child’s school. We also provide our children and their mentors with several out-of-school bonding experiences throughout the year.
In March 2013, Garrett Mentors was presented with the Golden Apple Award for Garrett County by the Comptroller of Maryland for superior volunteer work in Maryland public schools. Our motto is “Inspire by example!”
In 2018 we were voted Garrett County’s favorite charity by our community in the Deep Creek Times People’s Choice Challenge! We also celebrated our 10th anniversary which was acknowledged and celebrated by the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce and U.S. Senator from Maryland Chris Van Hollen. Due to her work with our organization, our Executive Director, Laura Fike was named on the 2022 Maryland Daily Record’s list of the Top 40 Leading Women Under 40 in the state and in 2023 received the Bridgewater College of Virginia Young Alumnus Award as well as the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce’s Volunteer of the Year Award.
